Prophylaxis (Teeth Cleaning)

A dental prophylaxis is a thorough cleaning on relatively helathy teeth for the prevention of periodontal disease.  This is usually recommended twice a year and performed at your dentist's office.

Periodontal maintenance

After active periodontal therapy, whether surgical or non-surgical, regular periodic maintenance care is essential to stabilize your periodontal disease.

Cleaning includes:
  • Plaque removal. Tartar (also referred to as calculus) and plaque buildup, both above and below the gum line, can result in serious periodontal problems. Unfortunately, even with a proper home brushing and flossing routine, it can be impossible to remove all debris, bacteria and deposits.  Localized sites specific scaling and route planing is often included.  The experienced eye of a dentist or hygienist using specialized dental equipment is necessary to catch potentially damaging buildups.
  • A healthier looking smile. Stained and yellowed teeth can dramatically decrease the esthetics of a smile. Polishing is an effective treatment in ridding the teeth of these unsightly stains.
  • Fresher breath. Bad breath (or halitosis) is generally indicative of advancing periodontal disease, or bacteria build up at the base of the tongue.

Periodontal maintenance is usually done at 3-4 month intervals at our office or alternating with your dentist's office, depending on the stability of your periodontal condition.
